The oral narratives vary but one is Aztec mythology where the princess Iztaccíhuatl falls in love with Popocatépetl, one of her father's warriors. He promises to marry her when he returns from war. She falsely is told that he had died in battle, and believing the news, she dies of grief. When he returns, he kneels by her grave for infinity and become mountains.
